Like a girl, oil on canvas & print collage, 2024.
Inspired by Rauschenberg’s Combines, I sought to capture the complex emotions and collective memories of womanhood. Images of my carefree younger self in a pink swimsuit are accompanied by the iconic symbolism of Marilyn Monroe and the first Barbie doll, powerful shapers of identity. How do our childhood icons influence our individual and collective understanding of femininity?

For this diptych, I used mono Gelli prints to delve into the changing nature of my memories of my late grandparents. The first print is detailed and crisp, reflecting a memory that’s still vivid in my mind. In contrast, the second print is more indistinct and nebulous, illustrating the passage of time and how memories can become less clear. Working with the mono print technique, which involves a single layer of ink transferred onto paper, I’ve aimed to physically represent the intangible process of memory erosion.
